Why You Should Recycle Your Pallets

Recycling pallets is one of the most environmentally friendly things you can do. Millions of pallets are used by businesses annually, and the wood to make them means that trees have to be cut down.

In an excellent recycling effort in 2011, over 470 million pallets were recovered in 2011, and nearly 330 million were reused. The other 140 million were recycled into other materials!

Having pallets pile up in your business takes up valuable floor space and creates the perfect cubby holes for mice and other vermin. Additionally, since they are made from dry wood, they pose a risk of fire. Lastly, pallets sitting around just looks plain ugly.

What Do We Do With Recycled Pallets?

When you drop off, or we pick up your used pallets from your business, there are a few different things we might do with them. The first thing we do is inspect them to determine their level of quality.

Depending on the quality, your pallet might be repaired, reused, turned in crafts, or chopped in mulch.

Here are some details on our process:

Reuse

If the pallets are of good quality and are not falling apart, the pallets will be reused. We provide our pallets to local Michigan pallet distributors and wholesalers. They are then offered back into the community as part of the environmental sustaining efforts we hold dear.

Repair

Perhaps the pallets are in decent shape but just need a little TLC. In that case, a few more nails or a couple of new boards to hold them together will make them ready for reuse. Once we have these pallets back in tip-top shape, we’ll provide them back to the supply chain to be used again.

Pallet Crafts

Recycling or upcycling pallets for home and craft projects is growing in popularity. From pallet paneling to furniture to flooring, people can create a lot of things from pallets.

Pallets can be used to build furniture such as:

  • Bed frames
  • Dressers
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Benches
  • Desks

Additionally, pallets can be used for artistic exploits as well. This is called “recycle art,” and pallets are used as backings for paintings, bar decor, lamps, candleholders, and more - the possibilities are endless!

Some people have constructed tree houses, birdhouses, planter boxes, and even wooden floors out of the scrap wood from pallets!

Mulch

If the pallet is too broken to repair or be used for a craft, it will be disassembled. We will remove all nails and staples and turn the boards into mulch. The mulch will then be used for landscaping in MI, where it will naturally decompose.

Don’t Throw Your Pallets in a Dumpster

We’ve all seen pallets sitting next to trash cans, dumpsters, or on the curb. Many of us have never stopped to think about what happens after the pallets are no longer useful and just thrown away. They’re made from wood, which is renewable, yet we’re wasting them and harming the environment in the process. But they don’t have to end up in a landfill!

By recycling your pallets, you ensure that they are used multiple times and serve a “fuller” purpose other than decomposing in a landfill. The pallet can have a second, third, or fourth life (or even more) as a reused pallet, in an upcycled project (turned into furniture or artwork), or as mulch in a garden.
