Why Rent a Dumpster?

There are many reasons to rent a dumpster. You may need a dumpster rental if you are planning a major home remodeling or a large construction project, or maybe you just need to clean out the garage. Regardless of why you need one, though, you will want to ensure that you choose the right company—you don’t want to end up with a bunch of garbage in your driveway because it’s the wrong size or type of container.

Here are some of the top reasons our customers have rented dumpsters:

  • Home, garage, and shed cleanout - Maybe you’re moving soon, or you’ve deciding to get rid of decades worth of belongings you’ve been hoarding, a dumpster rental is an excellent way to part with all the things you didn’t even know you owned.
  • Remodeling and renovation - if you’re doing a lot of interior or exterior construction work, a dumpster is an excellent way to rid of all the old building materials.
  • Outdoor cleanup project - if you’re getting together with a group of people to clean up trash in a park, a dumpster rental is perfect for cleaning up the environment.

How To Know What Size Dumpster to Rent

If you’ve never rented a dumpster before, it will be hard for you to know what size to rent for your project. Don’t worry; we’re here to help. A 10-yard dumpster is about 14 feet long by 3-½ feet high by 7-½ feet wide to give you some perspective.

It can hold 10 cubic yards of trash, which is about 55 to 75 33-gallon filled trash bags - it can hold a lot, up to 3 tons (6,000 lbs)!

Here’s how much trash each size dumpster can handle:

  • 6 yard - 25 to 35 33-gallon trash bags
  • 10 yard - 55 to 75 33-gallon trash bags
  • 15 yard  - 80 to 110 33-gallon trash bags
  • 20 yard  - 110 to 185 33-gallon trash bags

What You Can’t Put in a Dumpster

Only items considered “non-hazardous waste” can be put into a dumpster. Hazardous materials can cause harm to the environment and people; they all have unique disposal processes.

Here are some hazardous materials you cannot throw into a dumpster:

  • Asbestos - most commonly found in older buildings. If you are doing a renovation project in an old building, have the materials tested for asbestos before proceeding.
  • Contaminated soils - soils contaminated with hazardous wastes should be handled by the EPA or a hazardous waste dropoff center.
  • Motor oil, transmission fluid, pesticides, freon, and gasoline - contact the EPA or local hazardous waste center for disposal information.
  • Household cleaners - check the disposal instructions on the containers
  • Oils, fuels, and propane tanks - anything flammable is not permitted
  • Undrained appliances - includes dishwashers and washing machines
  • Whole tiers - tires can make hollow spaces in landfills allowing methane gas to buildup
  • Paints, paint thinners, wood stains, and lacquer - they often contain toxins
  • Non-alkaline batteries - includes lithium, car batteries, computer batteries, silver-oxide batteries, and more
  • Medical waste - the EPA or a local health agency can direct proper disposal
  • Inks and resins - they can stain and damage equipment
  • Hot water tanks - the tanks can trap methane gases in the landfill and explode

What Can Go in a Dumpster

There are many things that you can put in a dumpster! Essentially, everything that is not listed in the “can’t go in a dumpster” list can be disposed of in a dumpster.

The items that can go in a dumpster include:

  • Furniture
  • Yard waste (branches, leaves, etc.)
  • Drained household appliances
  • Alkaline batteries
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Construction debris (wood, asphalt, concrete, etc.)
